ToolSkool Reviews

Common Thread: Craftsman, American Pickers, and Toolskool

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

By: Beth Knott

I got a press release titled: THE CRAFTSMAN® BRAND HITS THE ROAD WITH “PICKER” FRANK FRITZ IN SEARCH OF AMERICA’S TREASURES AND CLASSIC TOOLS.  By itself, that press release would have been newsworthy enough to publish on Toolskool, but lately I've heard a lot about American Pickers, because the building where Toolskool has its offices is about to be home to the retail outlet for American Pickers... a storefront called "Antique Archaeology".  The space where the store will be located is currently being renovated and we hope to welcome the store to Marathon Village by June or July at the latest.

Marathon Village, in addition to being the humble abode to Toolskool and soon-to-be-home to Antique Archaeology, is the address for many creative businesses in Nashville, including photographers, Corsair Artisan Micro Batch Craft Spirits and Taproom, the "ever-cool" Lighting 100 FM, many film and video production companies, photographers, Tuned-In Cafe, and my buddies at Marathon Fitness, who often help me lift the heavy boxes delivered to Toolskool. Marathon Village is the historic site of the former Marathon Motor Cars which were made in Nashville at the facility from 1914 - 1918.  So you can imagine how truly cool the old car factory is!

So, while there is no direct connection between Craftsman and Marathon Village, if you connect the dots, you will see the connection between Craftsman, American Pickers, and Toolskool!

So here's the rest of the News from Craftsman about Frank Fritz' search for classic tools:

Popular antique collector and picker Frank Fritz will review submitted treasures on the Craftsman Facebook page and appear at select Sears Hometown Stores

Hoffman Estates, Ill.  (May 4, 2011) – The Craftsman brand has teamed up with antique Americana collector and picker, Frank Fritz, to launch Finding America’s Treasures, a program which will spotlight the backyard treasures and rusty gold found in garages, workshops and attics across the country. Fans can share a photo of their treasure and a brief description of its history with Fritz at facebook.com/craftsman, and be entered to win Craftsman gift cards each week from now until Aug. 12.

“For more than 80 years, Craftsman has provided innovative tool solutions that customers trust,” said Scott Freidheim, president, Kenmore, Craftsman & DieHard. “We want to celebrate our customers that share our passion for creating America’s most trusted tools by giving them the opportunity to participate in Finding America’s Treasures."

“Craftsman is a brand that holds a special place in history because these tools are often handed from one generation to the next,” said Fritz, who routinely uses Craftsman tools when restoring his own pieces. “The Craftsman tools themselves are collectible and they’re ideal for taking on almost any type of antique restoration project.”

To read Fritz’s weekly comments on the most interesting items and stories, visit Facebook.com/Craftsman and click on the Amer. Treasures application. Fans who login and upload a photo of a new item are entered to win a $100 gift card, good towards the purchase of the latest Craftsman innovations. A total of five winners will be chosen each week.[i] Visitors to the page can also comment on each other’s photos and interact with Fritz and other Craftsman fans.

Finding America’s Treasures will also host special events at 31 Sears Hometown Store locations across the country. At the events, fans will be encouraged to bring in items that have been hiding in their garage or attic and a local appraiser will provide a professional opinion of the item’s value. Craftsman Club members can also receive a 10 percent discount off any Craftsman tool or lawn and garden purchases in-store that day. Event dates and locations include:

  • May 7:  Baxter, Minn.; Clinton, Iowa; Hastings, Neb.; Sedalia, Mo.
  • May 21: Baker City, Ore.; Jackson, Wyo.; Payson, Ariz.; Red Bluff, Calif.; Scappoose, Ore.
