I love cookies. Chocolate chip used to be my favorite. That was, until I found these Bench Cookies from Bench Dog Tools. They’re a little dry, but very tasty. OK, they look more like hockey pucks than cookies, but the bottom line is they do a great job at keeping stuff from sliding around your workbench. The concept is simple.
A 3 inch circumference disc has neoprene-like layers laminated to both sides. You place a couple of the cookies on the bench, then put your workpiece on top of the cookies. You’re now free to sand, rout, file, you-name-it, and your workpiece will stay put. The more pressure you exert downward, the better the Bench Cookies work.
I was curious as to whether dust would inhibit their ability to retain their “stickiness”. It does not. Even dusty, the cookies work well to keep things from sliding around. In measuring one of the discs for this review, I dropped it on the concrete floor from about 3 feet and it bounced (a couple of times and quite admirably) and didn’t break. That’s always a big test in my shop. When I develop a case of butter fingers – watch out! It gets bad.
In all, I’d give these Bench Cookies an "A". They’re a definite buy - especially at the low price I found at Lowe's or Amazon.com – just $12 for 4. I have never used bench dogs with much success – I’ve always been more of a clamp guy, but I think these will see a lot of use around my shop.
Nice work, Bench Dog…
