In our business, we tend to be creatures of habit – sticking with the same brand names of tools and products that we’ve used for years – possibly even generations. Part of the reason for that is in our DNA…we just like it that way. The other reason is that very rarely do we ever see true advancements and enhancements – especially in the tool industry.
I want to tell you about a change to what some consider an already great saw…most would consider the Delta Unisaw a legend. It’s been newly re-designed, both cosmetically and mechanically. I think it looks more like a sports car than a tool…and I like it.
There are a lot of things I could tell you about where this saw is concerned, but here are the top three things I definitely want you to note.
- To start with, all the controls for blade height and angle have been move front and center…where they should be. And they’ve added a really cool speedometer-looking gauge. And yes…it’s accurate. The new location of this cluster makes adjustments much simpler.
- Next on my list is the addition of a drawer to the side extension table. You might not think that this is that big of a deal, but it’s smartly designed inside and even has room for additional blades. Smart and Tidy… A combination I like.
- Finally, Delta was the first to conform to 2010 UL standards for blade guards. And this is one you may actually leave on the saw – seriously! Why, because, it’s very easy to adjust and remove both the split guard and the anti-kickback fingers. The knife is adjustable, too…thanks to a spring lever up front. Oh, and the blade is moved back, so there’s more material support on the leading edge of the table. And the throat plate comes out easily, too. Plus, you can actually fit your hand inside for blade changes.
So those are my three points that make me say that the changes to the Unisaw make it worth taking a look. They started toying with a legendary saw and actually made it better. That’s saying something!
Did I mention it cuts wood?
