Rockwell JawHorse Workstation Solves Problems

Giving you an extra hand for almost any project…

Within an hour of unpacking the box containing the JawHorse Portable Workstation (RK9003) from Rockwell Tools, I was using it to solve a problem. Granted it isn’t a burley, gritty, cool-guy project but I would have been hard pressed to find a better device.

The Project:

A brand new lamp arrived with the threads connecting two parts damaged to the point they would no longer remain together. I already had the company sending a replacement. So I figured I would throw a little Loctite on there and see if I could fix it. Due to the odd shape and configuration, a normal bar clamp would not work (at least not very well, and not without me spending some time making it work). So I put the lamp on the JawHorse and began to clamp it.

The Solution:

This being the first opportunity to operate this thing, I quickly realized that up to 1 ton of clamping force might crush my little imported lamp. That's when I came up with a diabolically clever solution. See the picture with ratchet strap. I used a ratchet strap between the clamping arm and leg to apply gentle pressure and it worked like a charm. Now maybe I could have just “lightly” clamped it into place, but I didn’t want to take a chance, so don’t burst my bubble, as I am so very proud of my solution.

Portable Workstation RK9003 vs. Sheetmaster RK9002

The Portable Workstation (Model RK9003) is the lighter duty model of the two versions of the JawHorse. The heavier duty version is the JawHorse Sheetmaster (Model RK9002). The main differences are that the Sheetmaster has an actual foot on the third leg and a 49 inch jaw width. It also weighs 10 pounds more than the portable version and so they put “scooter type” wheels on the front of it for better mobility due to the weight.

The JawHorse Portable Workstation that I am reviewing, will clamp items up to 17 inches one way just flip the jaw around for a 37 inch span.

It will clamp with a force of 1 ton
It will hold up to 600 lbs on the Jawhorse
It is made of solid steel
It weights 43 lbs
It takes up a footprint of 39” x 39” x 34” when open
When closed the footprint is 29” x 14” x 13”

Now, I know that my particular job was only scratching the surface of what this tool can do, so I am looking forward to putting it to the test as a clamp, vise, and workbench. Brad Staggs has the older version and it’s a staple in his shop. He uses it on a daily bases for all kinds of woodworking projects.

Of course you can use the JawHorse Portable Workstation for clamping all kinds of woodworking projects.And it helps to set up a extra work table on a jobsite.

More than anything, it's like having an extra pair of hands when you need them. Especially for big, bulky, or odd-shaped items that would be hard to hold by even the strongest human hands. This tool keeps those work pieces firmly in place without bobbling around while you get the job done.

The JawHorse Portable Workstation is solid in any event. When I get to the projects I have in mind for this thing to assist me, I will write up another amusing and witty tale of heroic toolmanship.
